Students who successfully complete this program, by achieving a grade of 2.0 or better for each individual course in the program and program prerequisites, should be able to:

  • Apply knowledge of medical and clinical terminology, anatomy and physiology, human diseases and pharmacology.
  • Explain healthcare delivery processes including how information systems are used in health care settings.
  • Outline the process used in the selection and implementation of health information systems as well as project planning.
  • Interpret health record content including identifying what makes a complete health record.
  • Apply policies and procedures to ensure the accuracy and integrity of health data.
  • Accurately assign diagnostic and procedural codes in accordance with Uniform Hospital Discharge Data Set (UHDDS), National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI), American Hospital Association (AHA), and American Medical Association (AMA) guidelines for inpatient and outpatient health records.
  • Identify current practices in coding and classification systems, components of fee setting, prospective payment systems, and revenue cycle management.
  • Utilize computer applications including electronic health records, encoders and grouping systems, spreadsheets, databases, and reporting applications.
  • Assess the legal and ethical issues related to health care information, including the release and security of confidential data.
  • Collect and analyze health data and healthcare statistics for operations, research, cancer, public health, and other disease-based registries.
  • Explain how management principles and leadership styles are used by health information supervisors.
  • Analyze quality improvement processes in healthcare facilities, for clinical documentation integrity, and with regards to legal considerations.
In addition to the outcomes above, students will gain the skills and knowledge included in Shoreline Student Learning Outcomes (SSLOs): Communication, Critical Thinking, Equity & Social Justice, Information Literacy, and Quantitative & Symbolic Reasoning.
