Work Study

Work study offers on and off-campus part-time employment opportunities to current Shoreline students that are on financial aid and have received work study allocation as part of their financial aid package. Students work and earn money to help pay for the cost of going to college such as tuition, fees, books, transportation, and other expenses.

In addition to helping you pay for your education, the work study program helps you gain work experience, develop your skills, and build a possible pathway to future employment opportunities.

Work study is a need-based program and your eligibility is determined based on your current financial aid application through the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or the WASFA (Washington State Financial Aid Application). You can check the Financial Aid section in your ctcLink account to see if you have been offered work study as part of your financial aid package.

You must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits each quarter and must meet Shoreline’s Satisfactory Academic Policy standards to remain eligible. If your enrollment level falls below 6 credits or if you are put on financial aid cancellation due to our Satisfactory Academic Progress policy, then your work study is cancelled as well.

As a work study, you may work up to 19 hours a week while classes are in session. During quarter breaks, you may work up to 40 hours a week if you have enough unearned funds remaining and you are planning to take classes the next quarter.

The Financial Aid section in your ctcLink account lists your quarterly work-study allocation. Your work hours depend on your quarterly allocation, hourly wage rate, and your work schedule based on the department’s need. In general, you can use the formula below to figure out what your work schedule could look like:

Work study allocation ÷ weeks in a quarter (usually 11 weeks) = weekly earnings
Weekly earnings ÷ hourly rate = number of hours per week you can work

Work study students:

  • Must get paid for all the hours they work.
  • Cannot volunteer at the same place they work.
  • Get paid twice a month on the 10th and 25th of each month, if they work on campus.
  • Must get paid at least once a month, if work off-campus.

Work studies are responsible for keeping track of their hours worked and to make sure they are not over-earning their quarterly work study allocation. All work studies must stop working by June 15th of each academic year.
